Oka Sushi is SUCH a welcome addition to Fountain Hills. Seriously, IGNORE any reviews giving it less than 4 stars. I've been on *several* occasions and each time the food was good, service was prompt, the restaurant is clean, open, airy, and welcoming.
If you're familiar with Fountain Hills, you know there aren't a plethora of options. They've been trying to revitalize downtown, and Oka Sushi is an awesome starting point. Located within walking distance to Fountain Park, it's a great place to grab lunch or dinner and spend the afternoon or evening around the Fountain.
I always get the a roll or two, which have consistently been excellent. My mom always gets ngiri and, thus far, they've always had Uni available (a rarity!). They have a full service bar (and you can sit inside or outside at the bar, which I love!). The patio is lovely although I haven't had a chance to sit outside since it opened this summer (too hot!).
All in all, I would highly recommend you try it. (Now... if the businesses neighboring Oka would stay open past 5 PM, that'd be great! Several times I've wanted to stop into the store next door but it closes at 5 PM on a Saturday. Huh? Oka brings in hundreds of people between 5 and 7 PM. Seriously, Oka is basically an anchor business. Lookin' at you, Classy Jazzy). -

We have been here three times now, with only one time being great. I realize the first time was their warm opening, so we gave them another chance. Second time was much better! We had a great server and good food.
We went back on a Monday for a few drinks and to sit on the patio because the weather was nice. At first they told us we couldn't, but found out the individual wasn't informed that he could sit people out there.
We had tried to order a bottle of saki, to which they didn't have the one we wanted.
We may try them again because we were excited to have a sushi spot in town. -

I have favorite sushi places in Scottsdale but this plave being so close to home, it's a welcome site for us who don't feel like driving to too far and need a sushi fix. This is our first visit, and we weren't disappointed. We started with Seaweed Salad, $5.50 followed by a Spider Roll, $13; Shrimp Tempura Roll, $12; Salmon Roll, $6; Eel and Cucumber Roll, $7.45; Spicy Tuna roll, $7; Caterpillar Roll, $13 and Smelt Roe Nigiri, &7.
Everything tasted wonderful and the ambience was very nice and clean.
Instead of taking our order, there should be a check off sheet for all the different menu items. -

First- I walked in and was super impressed. Loved the look of the place. It is summer so the bar window wasn't open but you can tell it does open and you can sit outside. Really cool.
We came for lunch and got the poké and chicken fried rice. It was tasty. I asked for no tempura flakes on the poké and it came out perfectly. Waitress was super nice. 2 reasons it loses a star: I think their dressing on salad that we get complimentary at lunch is terrible (tastes like a pile of mayo) and the tables don't reach the seats- we were seated at a high table and I was sitting on the bench... I had to lean forward to reach the table because the base of the table was so large the table couldn't come close enough. It isn't the most comfortable to eat like that. Fine for drinks but not a meal. You are better off sitting at a low top table. -

On the Fourth of July, my partner-in-dine and I headed over to Fountain Hills for a long weekend. We decided to check out Oka Sushi which is a newly opened restaurant near Fountain Park.
The interior was sparsely decorated but the lifelike cherry tree which greeted us as we entered the restaurant was a nice touch.
We ordered the chicken karaage, Grilled Shrimp Roll, October Fest Roll, plus three kinds of nigiri sushi -- tuna, eel, and salmon roe. The rolls and the nigiri sushi were good and savory. The chicken karaage, on the other hand, was ok but not great. It was lacking the tanginess which a bit of lemon juice could have solved easily.
But my main complaint lies with the sauce that came with the karaage. The description for chicken karaage on their menu said "Japanese style fried chicken with Japanese mayo", but our chicken came with teriyaki sauce. When I asked for Japanese mayo, I was told by the server that that would entail an up-charge of $1.00! I pointed out that the menu explicitly spelled out "Japanese Mayo" as included with the chicken karaage. Another staff member came over to explain that they had changed the sauce from Japanese mayo to teriyaki sauce.
I had three arguments against this turn of events. First, chicken karaage in Japan is always served with Japanese mayo. The partner-in-dine and I lived in Japan for a decade and can safely (and humbly) say that we are knowledgeable on matters concerning our beloved chicken karaage. Secondly, the restaurant could have edited the menu for any changes. Finally, charging a dollar for a dollop of mayonnaise seemed a bit much.
The restaurant ended up giving us their version of Japanese mayo which didn't look or taste like any Japanese mayo we've had in Japan. It tasted like (American) mayonnaise mixed with Shiracha hot chili sauce. Thankfully, they didn't charge us for the mayonnaise.
In conclusion, the food we ordered at Oka Sushi was good but not exemplary. Entrees weren't cheap either.
